Russians have a mutation that causes depression

A new genetic mutation has been identified in some Russians at the Genotek medical genetic center.
The study also involved specialists from the National Research University ITMO, the Bekhterev Medical Research Center for Psychiatry and Neurology, and the Almazov Medical Research Center.
The genomic data of more than 4.5 thousand Russians aged 18 to 65 were analyzed. The new mutation was found in 1 out of 10 inhabitants of the country.
This mutation occurs in the MAGI2 gene, which is associated with the maintenance of gut homeostasis and is involved in the neural connection between the brain and the gut. Scientists have identified a link between depression and the gastrointestinal tract due to a violation of the brain-gut axis.
Experts pointed out that inflammation of the intestines is not as common as diseases of other organs of the gastrointestinal tract. But at the same time they occupy a leading place in the number of deaths.
