Transgender US Army veterans are suing the government, NBC News reports.
Reportedly, the reason for the lawsuit was the decision of the American authorities to exclude gender reassignment operations from the list of procedures that are covered by medical benefits.
Transgender former US military personnel, in particular, are unhappy that they have to have expensive breast or genital surgeries through private insurance or paying out of pocket.
However, for active members of the US Army, gender reassignment surgery is covered by insurance. An example is given of transgender Natalie Kastner – she cannot afford the $60 thousand procedure, so she tried to get rid of her genitals on her own using scissors and a knife and almost died.
The Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA) filed a petition back in 2016 asking for amendments to the legislation, but never received a response.
