US President Joe Biden, who said that in the event of an armed clash between Taiwan and China, Washington would enter the conflict on the side of Taipei, violated the principle of “strategic ambiguity” in American foreign policy, writes 19Fortyfive columnist Gordon Chan. For this reason, Biden may be removed from decision-making.

Biden made a statement about possible direct military support for Taiwan in an interview with CBS.

Chan writes that in doing so, Biden dramatically changed the country’s long-term course in the international arena, which was built on the principle of “strategic ambiguity.” This approach allowed the US to keep its true intentions in the Taiwan issue a secret.

After Biden’s interview, officials from his administration said that Washington’s foreign policy had not changed. Thus, they refuted the statements of the head of state, the article notes.

The columnist writes: “Biden is the commander in chief.” According to the US constitution, he is responsible for shaping the country’s foreign policy. “However, his subordinates directly contradicted him, effectively using their powers.”

The turmoil in the US presidential administration could have consequences, given that “the world is moving into a state of constant turbulence,” Chan concluded.

The situation around the island of Taiwan, which China considers its province, escalated in August after a visit to Taipei by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. Beijing does not recognize the sovereignty of Taiwan and is categorically against contacts between the island’s authorities and officials from other countries.
