The All-Russian Popular Front (ONF) stated that about 40% of Russian schools currently have open vacancies for teachers. As the organization explains, the most significant is the shortage of physics and mathematics teachers.
How they write “News” with reference to the ONF study, 43.8% of school principals surveyed by the organization reported a shortage of mathematics teachers, and 22.4% of principals reported a shortage of physics teachers.
ONF expert Dmitry Tsvich said that the results of the Popular Front’s study show that in the near future “there will simply be no one to replace retiring specialists in schools.”
This summer, Russian Minister of Education Sergei Kravtsov statedthat subject teachers for Russian schools may be trained in colleges. With this measure, officials expect to partially solve the problem of shortage of teachers in the country’s schools.
Over the past few years, representatives of the Ministry of Education have repeatedly complained about the shortage of teaching staff in the regions. According to the Center for the Economics of Continuing Education at RANEPA, in 2021–2022 the Russian Federation lacked 3.1% of specialists (see Kommersant of July 27, 2022). And the HSE Institute of Education pointed to an increase in the number of teachers of retirement and pre-retirement age, as young specialists do not go to work in the system.
