A new variant of coronavirus BA.2.86 has been detected for the first time in the UK, the UKHSA said.
Earlier it was reported that this variant, characterized by a large number of mutations, was found in Denmark, Israel and the United States.
So far, only one human case has been confirmed, according to a document posted on the government’s website. It is noted that this person has not recently traveled outside the country, which implies “a certain degree of contact infection within the UK.”
Earlier, WHO said: a new variant of COVID-19 BA.2.86 is “under observation” due to the large number of mutations. According to the Guardian newspaper, this variant has “over 30 mutations in the spike protein.”
So far, six cases of BA.2.86 have been detected worldwide in four countries.
