President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed laws on the extension of martial law and general mobilization in the country. This was announced by the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Yaroslav Zheleznyak in his Telegram channel.
“The President signed laws on the extension of martial law and general mobilization for 90 days, that is, until November 15, 2023,” the message says.
Zheleznyak specified that the laws would come into force on August 18. Until that moment, the previous documents on martial law and general mobilization are in force.
The extension of martial law in Ukraine means the cancellation of parliamentary elections, which were to be held on October 29, 2023. According to Ukrainian law, voting cannot be held during martial law.
In April, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk saidthat a change in the law would be required to hold elections under martial law. At the same time, in May Zelensky pointed outthat elections in October will not take place if martial law in Ukraine is still in effect.
The Ukrainian authorities introduced martial law in the country on February 24, 2022, the day the Russian special operation began. On February 25, Zelensky signed a decree on a general mobilization. The last time the period of martial law and mobilization in Ukraine was extended on May 2 until August 18.
