A memorial plaque to the poetess Anna Akhmatova, considered stolen by unknown people in St. Petersburg, was handed over to the police by lawyer Vladimir Filatov. As the lawyer told Kommersant, he removed the board from the wall to save it from vandals.
“The owner of the Crosses is now incomprehensible, so the sign can be broken or thrown away. To prevent this from happening, I decided to take it and give it to the police,” he explained.
The lawyer expects that the police will hand over the memorial to New Crosses (Crosses-2, Kolpino pre-trial detention center). He noted that the board lay in his car trunk for two or three days, and then he gave it to the colonel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, whose name he did not remember.
Earlier, Boris Vishnevsky, deputy of the Yabloko faction in the legislature of the city, called on the governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, and the head of Dom.RF, Vitaly Mutko, to take urgent measures to return the memorial to its place. State Duma deputy Sergei Shargunov later made a similar request on behalf of the “literary community of St. Petersburg”. He sent a similar letter to Arkady Gostev, head of the Federal Penitentiary Service.
In the Smolny Committee for Culture, they answered Kommersant’s request that the tablet was not on their balance sheet, so the city authorities did not monitor its condition and did not know where it could go. The same was reported in the regional Federal Penitentiary Service, noting that the board was placed at the initiative of employees at their own expense. The media wrote that the memorial could have been stolen, but none of the owners ever contacted the police.
