27 EU countries handed over official demarche to Georgia due to air connection with Russia

The European Union made an official demarche with respect to Georgia in connection with the resumption of air communication with Russia. Representatives of 27 EU countries conveyed Georgia’s position during a meeting with Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili in Tbilisi. This decision caused concern and disapproval of the EU, as it contradicts the unanimous decision to stop flights due to the conflict in Ukraine and close airspace to Russian aircraft.
EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky noted that such a decision by the Georgian authorities contradicts the desire to isolate Russia and put pressure on it so that Moscow changes its tactics.
At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Economy of Georgia explained that the context of Georgia differs from the context of the EU member states. He pointed to the difficult situation that Georgia faces, having a direct border with Russia and 20% of the territories not controlled by the country.
The minister stressed that he had openly discussed this context with the EU ambassadors and believes that most of them understand and logically assess the difficulties that Georgia is facing.
In light of Georgia’s allowing direct flights with Russia, which has been closed since 2019, Brussels has begun to express doubts about Georgia’s European course.
