19 countries expressed interest in joining the BRICS

13 countries have officially declared their interest in joining the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), six more have announced this unofficially. This was stated by the representative of the South African Foreign Ministry in the association Anil Suklal, transmits Bloomberg.
“13 countries have formally requested to join, and another six have applied informally. We receive applications to join every day,” he said.
At the next summit, according to the diplomat, the issue of BRICS expansion will be discussed by all participants. As the agency notes, Beijing is interested in expanding the association, wishing to strengthen its diplomatic influence. China’s GDP is more than double that of the other four members of the organization combined, the agency said.
Earlier in March, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov informedthat 16 countries would like to join the BRICS. According to him, now there are no grounds for reasoning about whether permanent or semi-permanent membership in the organization is possible. “If we use the terminology more typical of the UN in the context of discussions on the reform of the Security Council, I think we should talk about partnership formats, about BRICS + and full membership formats,” he said then.
BRICS is an interstate association that includes five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It was created in 2006 at the initiative of Russia within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). South Africa joined in 2010.
This year the BRICS summit will be held in South Africa in August. At the end of March, the South African Foreign Ministry confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was invited to the BRICS summit, despite the fact that the decision of the ICC “is some cause for concern.” Today, April 24, Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov confirmed receipt of the invitation. Earlier, he said that the decision on Putin’s trip to the summit has not yet been made.
