The equality of men and women in a number of social, political and economic parameters in the world is 68.4%. As noted in the new Global Gender Gap Report, which is compiled annually by the World Economic Forum (WEF), if the movement towards gender equality continues at the current pace, then it will be possible to achieve it, that is, reach 100%, no earlier than 2154. Russia is not included in this rating for the second year in a row.
The situation with the equality of men and women in the public, political and economic spheres in the world is in no hurry to change for the better. Over the past year, the equality indicator has managed to grow by only 0.3% and reach the pre-pandemic level of 68.4%. If we move at such a pace, then full gender equality in the world can only be expected by 2154. This conclusion was made by the experts of the World Economic Forum in their annual report (.pdf) about gender equality in the world.
As WEF Managing Director Saadia Zahidi notes, in recent years the process of achieving gender equality in the world has faced many obstacles, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and now the world is experiencing a serious economic and geopolitical crisis. And while in some regions of the world gender equality shows a positive trend, in others it is worsening due to such crises.
Report about the situation with gender equality in the world and the ranking of countries on this indicator, the WEF has been publishing annually since 2006. Each of the countries included in the rating is assessed taking into account such data as the share of working women and men in the total working population of the country, the share of women and men among top managers of companies, the participation of men and women in politics, education, access for them to services and healthcare, wage conditions, etc. The current rating includes 146 countries, not including Russia.
As noted in the WEF, so far no country in the world has been able to achieve 100 percent gender equality. Closest to this are the countries of Europe, primarily Northern.
Nine countries in the top 10 managed to bring this figure to 80% or more. These are Iceland, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden, Germany, Nicaragua, Namibia and Lithuania.
The leader in the ranking has not changed for 14 years in a row: Iceland is in 1st place with a 91.2% parity score. And it remains so far the only country that has managed to overcome the mark of 90%. Since last year, among the top 10 countries, Norway has improved its performance, which has risen from 3rd to 2nd place, Germany – from 10th to 6th, Lithuania – from 11th to 9th , Belgium — from 14th to 10th. Finland dropped from 2nd to 3rd place over the year. The rest of the leaders remained in their places.
From the opposite end of the rating are placed Afghanistan, where the rate of equality between men and women is 40.5%. Slightly better situation in Chad (57%), Algiers (57.3%), Iran (57.5%) and Pakistan (57.5%).
The fastest takeoff in the ranking for the year showed Liberiawhich has moved up 39 positions to rank 39th, Brazil (moved up 37 positions to 57th place), Colombia (at 33 positions and ranks 42nd), Estonia (up 30 positions to 22nd place). Most Significant worsening equity indicators East Timorwhich dropped 39 places to 95th, also Austria (down 26 positions, 47th) and France (lower by 25 positions, 40th place).
Among the regions, Europe came out on top in terms of equality this year (76.3%), overtaking North America (75%). The region of Latin America and the Caribbean (74.3%) concedes quite a bit to them. The level of gender equality is lower in the countries of Eurasia and Central Asia (69%), East Asia and the Pacific (68.8%), African countries located below the Sahara desert (68.2%). The lowest level of equality in the countries of Southeast Asia (63.4%) and in the Middle East and North Africa region (62.6%).
According to WEF experts, it will take 67 years for European countries to maintain the current trends in increasing gender equality to reach 100 percent. It will take North America 95 years, and the Middle East and North Africa all 152 years.
Not ranked for the second year in a row Russia. In 2020, it ranked 81st out of 153 countries of the world, in 2021 it was also 81st, but out of 156 countries of the world. The compilers do not give reasons for the absence of Russia in the ranking. Among the countries of the post-Soviet space, the highest level of gender equality is in Lithuania (80%, 9th place), Latvia (79.4%, 13th place), Moldova (78.8%, 19th place), Estonia (78.2%, 22nd). The lowest is in Tajikistan (67.2%, 111th place). Ukraine it occupies 66th place in the rating (71.4%), it has risen by 15 positions over the year.
