Zoom service disables paid licenses for Russian universities

The Zoom video conferencing service disables the functionality of paid licenses for Russian universities and closes the possibility of their renewal. This is reported by the Russian video conferencing service Webinar with reference to representatives of major universities.
“Zoom has begun disabling access to paid video conferencing accounts for public universities. Representatives of higher educational institutions included in the top 30 leading universities of the Russian Federation told Webinar Group about this, ”the Webinar press release says.
The growth in the number of new Webinar clients from February 24 to October was 112% compared to the same period in 2021, the service claims. The press release adds that the share of state-owned companies using the Russian video conferencing service increased in September to 22%.
Webinar Group is an ecosystem of video communication services for business, founded in 2008, is part of the MTS ecosystem. Webinar Group services are registered in the register of domestic software and have their own server infrastructure in Russia.
According to “Vedomosti”, the Kazan branch of the Russian State University of Justice, as well as the Russian State Social University and the Orenburg State Medical University recently faced the blocking of the Zoom license agreement.
In October, the Ministry of Industry and Trade asked industrial enterprises to stop using foreign messengers and video conferencing systems, including Zoom. In April, the Ministry of Digital presented a list of Russian analogues of foreign social networks and services. According to the department, most of these Russian resources “were a priority for the Russians even before the restrictions.”
