The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which unites more than 100 broadcasters, has refused to allow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to make a video message at the final of the Eurovision music contest. The EBU made this decision out of concern that the appearance of Mr. Zelensky “may politicize the event.”
“The Eurovision Song Contest is an international entertainment show with strict rules and principles that have been established since its inception. One of its cornerstones is the apolitical nature of the event. This principle prohibits political or other statements during the competition. The request from Zelensky … cannot be satisfied, because it would be contrary to the rules, ”explained The Times EBU representative.
In December 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) rejected Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s request to make a video message before the start of the final match of the World Cup in Qatar. The Eurovision final will take place tomorrow, May 13. It will be attended by 26 countries, including Ukraine, which won in 2022.
