The number of vacancies for developers of bots for messengers decreased in 2022, and specialists in creating chat bots on VKontakte decreased by half compared to 2021, Kommersant was told in hh.ru. According to market participants, the decline is due to both the closure of non-core projects and the growing interest in mini-applications with a web interface. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) can change the situation, but then the chatbot development market will concentrate around a small number of companies, experts say.
During 2022, 291 vacancies for developers of bots for Telegram and 160 vacancies for developers of VKontakte chat bots were opened in Russia, Kommersant was told in hh.ru. This is less than in 2021, by 3% and 54%, respectively. In January 2023, according to the service, 22 vacancies were opened related to the creation of Telegram bots, and seven vacancies for bot developers for VKontakte.
Telegram launched a chatbot platform in 2015. At the same time, “messages for business” appeared on VKontakte, allowing companies to connect automation tools to chats. The Russian market of conversational artificial intelligence (includes bot designers and natural language processing) in 2020 was estimated by Just AI at $44 million, or $76 million, taking into account government orders; data for later periods are not available. VK and Telegram did not respond to Kommersant’s requests.
Companies for which the introduction of bots was not a core task curtailed their projects in this area in 2022, Svetlana Zakharova, head of the department for working with clients and partners of Just AI, said: “For someone it was testing, creating a “bot for the sake of a bot” , or by developing a way to automate internal processes. The decrease in the number of projects, according to her, was also affected by the outflow of personnel from the country, “which led to the collapse of some teams.” At the same time, Ms. Zakharova noted that “relative stability” remained in the field of telecommunications, e-commerce and the fintech industry: “Projects aimed at making a profit – customer service, lead generation, debt collection and the like – remained in work.” Just AI’s revenue is up “nearly 50%” by 2021, she said.
In addition to the bots that work inside the dialogs, Telegram and VK have mini-app platforms: they are displayed in pop-up windows and use the same technologies as websites. For example, in this way, in particular, VTB introduced its online bank in Telegram (see “Kommersant” dated January 21). Most corporate clients prefer to order the development of mini-applications rather than chatbots, as users prefer “interfaces with beautiful graphic design and convenient buttons,” Andrey Vratsky, CEO of eXpress corporate messenger, said: “The only relevant scope of chatbots is different notification forms, for example, from the mail.
Most companies find it more profitable to order the development of chatbots from specialized companies, rather than hire their developers on staff, since “the quality of bots depends on the amount of data being processed,” said Karen Kazaryan, CEO of the Internet Research Institute. In his opinion, in the future the market will consolidate around companies whose products will be based on artificial intelligence technologies: “I believe that there will be several service companies that will provide chatbots of the ChatGPT level to customers. The simplest chatbots based on decision trees will remain artifacts of a bygone era.” Andrey Vratsky also notes that although the development of AI may open up prospects for chat bots, “only with time it will become clear what kind of questions these bots can look for answers to and what kind of business will really need it.”
