Yandex Taxi will reduce taxi drivers' commissions when demand is high

“Yandex (MOEX: YNDX) Taxi will reduce its commission during periods of high demand. This will provide drivers with additional income and encourage them to go on the line more often when the number of orders increases many times, the company said. In this way, the aggregator responded to claims from the Federal Antimonopoly Service; recently its head, Maxim Shaskolsky, said that many complaints had accumulated about the service due to high tariffs.

However, the service could not take action due to the moratorium on inspections of IT companies. Will reducing commissions help stabilize taxi prices? Taxi driver and author of the Telegram channel “Taxi Ombudsman” Maxim Titov doubts this: “It is the aggregator commission that is reduced, it sometimes reaches 30%. But the mechanism for reducing it is still completely opaque; it is not clear what algorithms these numbers will be calculated by.

In general, drivers say that if a trip costs, say, 2.5 thousand rubles, Yandex reduces the commission by about 100 rubles, that is, instead of 500 rubles. charges 400 rubles. But this usually applies to trips over short distances, which turn out to be very expensive for drivers. Because the further the trip, the lower the coefficient. During peak hours, all drivers are already working, it’s just that demand significantly exceeds supply, and there are not enough drivers.”

Yandex Taxi stated that they have already tested a mechanism to reduce commissions this winter. They claim that it allowed them to attract more cars, which led to price stabilization. And due to this measure, drivers earned an additional more than 500 million rubles in December. The chairman of the Taxi Forum public movement, Oleg Amosov, suggests that such orders were indeed in demand among drivers.

But, according to him, it was more likely due to the fact that they themselves turned out to be expensive: “Even during the New Year holidays, when there was high demand, we noticed that the inscription appeared: “The aggregator commission has been reduced due to high demand.” But when I looked into it, I didn’t see the commission drop by more than 1.5%. Usually it is 27.5%, but in this case Yandex takes 26%. But at the same time, the price of the trip increases even more.”

According to media reports, on the eve of March 8, the cost of travel increased by one and a half to two times. And in the Yandex Taxi application a warning appeared that “there are many more orders than cars. Serious traffic jams along the way – the longer the trip, the more expensive it is.” The company itself has repeatedly stated that high tariffs are due to a shortage of drivers and increased demand from users.
