Yandex.Taxi explained the rise in prices for trips by the shortage of drivers, the new law on taxis and the rise in prices of cars. At the same time, the department cannot conduct business inspections due to a moratorium valid until the end of 2024.

As RTVI was informed by Check Index, the average cost of a taxi trip in Russia in August 2023 was 441 rubles, in Moscow – 778 rubles. The average bill in Russia was 6% higher than last year, and also 3% higher than the level of July this year. In Moscow, the same figures increased by 14% and 2%, respectively. In some regions, taxi prices have increased more strongly – in Udmurtia, the price of one kilometer of travel increased by 23.3% per month, in Tatarstan – by 10.5%.

The Yandex.Taxi press service reported that in recent months, due to several factors, an increasing coefficient has been triggered. Firstly, there is a “dramatic increase” in prices for cars and their maintenance. Secondly, there is a shortage of drivers who are choosing more lucrative jobs amid increased demands on taxi drivers due to the new taxi law.

Deputy General Director of the Center for Strategic Research under the Russian Government Laura Nakoryakova, in a conversation with RTVI, said that geopolitics and the shortage of labor resources also influence the price of transportation. Chairman of the Public Council for Taxi Development Irina Zaripova believes that prices have increased due to increased taxi fleet costs for renovation, maintenance and repairs, as well as insurance and fuel.

At the same time, the chairman of the executive committee of the Interregional Transport Trade Union, Taras Shevchenko, believes that price increases are regulated by the aggregators themselves. According to him, they take up to 40% of the cost of the trip, and the minimum transportation tariffs set by carriers have not changed for many years.

New taxi law entered effective September 1st. Its discussion lasted about ten years. According to the amendments, aggregators are jointly and severally liable in the event of an accident if the driver was driven without a work permit. Now driving a taxi is prohibited for citizens with an outstanding criminal record, as well as drivers with three or more unpaid fines for violating traffic rules.
