X5 Group, which develops the Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, and Chizhik stores, is interested in acquiring the regional chains Pokupochka, PokupALKO, and Ga-ga from its former franchise partner, Tamerlan. The deal was approved by the FAS. Experts estimate the cost of a regional retailer at 4-6 billion rubles.
The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) officially informed, which agreed on a deal to acquire the X5 Group retail chains “Pokupochka”, “PokupALKO”, “Ga-ga”, which are being developed by Tamerlan. At the same time, X5 Group retains the ability to sell or transfer retail outlets to third parties, the FAS report says.
The Tamerlan group of companies was founded in 1999, has more than 300 Pokupochka, PukupALKO, Ga-ga stores in the Volgograd, Astrakhan, Rostov regions, Stavropol Territory and Kalmykia, indicated on the company’s official website. In 2003-2013, the franchise company in the regions operated the stores of the Pyaterochka chain, owned by the X5 Group.
The cost of the deal between X5 Group and Tamerlane is not disclosed. The general director of Infoline-Analytics, Mikhail Burmistrov, estimates the total cost of Tamerlan at about 4–6 billion rubles.
The press service of X5 Group noted that one of the priorities of the group’s strategy is development through the acquisition of controlling shares of regional players.
The retailer is considering the possibility of such partnerships in all regions, therefore, in some cases, to study the position of the regulator, it sends petitions to the FAS, indicate in the X5 Group. The Tamerlan Group of Companies did not promptly respond to Kommersant’s request.
This is not the first deal between X5 Group and Tamerlan Group. In October 2014, the federal retailer I bought Samara division of “Tamerlane”. Then 103 stores operating in the Samara region under the Pakupochka brand entered the Pyaterochka retail chain.
According to Infoline-Analytics, the Tamerlan group managed to increase revenue by 20% in 2022, to RUB 26 billion. without VAT. Mikhail Burmistrov notes that the group’s retail chains have strong positions in the southern regions. So, in the Volgograd region, the share of the retailer reaches 8%, in the Astrakhan region – more than 3%.
According to the expert, X5 Group can integrate local retail chains under the Pyaterochka and Perekrestok brands or continue to develop local brands by analogy with the Siberian retailers Krasny Yar and Slata. In both cases, the acquisition of Tamerlan will allow the retailer to strengthen its position in the southern regions, Mr. Burmistrov believes.
