WSJ: Johnson & Johnson cuts coronavirus vaccine production

The American company Johnson & Johnson decided to reduce the production of a vaccine against coronavirus, reported The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). This decision was made against the backdrop of declining demand. Johnson & Johnson has already terminated agreements for these vaccines with Catalent and Sanofi. The manufacturer is also suing Merck, which helped Johnson & Johnson make vaccines.
Johnson & Johnson vaccine was approved for US application in February 2021. WSJ writes that at that time the US authorities had high hopes for this drug, since it is one-component and does not have special storage conditions. However, the vaccine was not popular, including because of the identified risk of blood clots. Approximately 400 million doses of Pfizer vaccine, 290 million doses of Moderna and just 19 million doses of Johnson & Johnson have been used in the country, according to the US federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
About cases of thrombosis after the use of the drug became known back in April 2021. European regulator then confirmed association between vaccine and blood clots. Because of this, its use suspended in the USA. Company considered the possibility of modifying the vaccine. European regulator also called among the side effects of J&J drugs is capillary leak syndrome (increased capillary permeability, in which plasma from the vessels can enter the surrounding tissues). In May 2022, the US regulator recommended limit the use of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine.
