Why Yandex Taxi is introducing a new user evaluation algorithm

“Yandex (MOEX: YNDX) Taxi will be slower in finding drivers for those who often refuse orders. The aggregator has begun to implement a new algorithm that takes into account trip cancellations by users, the company told Kommersant FM. Based on a calculation based on the data of the last 30 orders, the passenger will be assigned one of three statuses: “Everything is in order,” “Acceptable” or “Disorder.” In the second case, the search for a car may take longer, and with the lowest status, another limitation will be added to this restriction – the user will not be able to order several cars.
As the company explained, this measure will encourage passengers not to cancel trips unnecessarily and will optimally allocate drivers’ time:
“The price of a taxi is affected by the balance of supply and demand: how many people in the area want to leave and how many cars there are nearby. Once the driver accepts the order, he becomes unavailable to other passengers. The fewer available drivers in the area, the higher the temporary increasing coefficient and, accordingly, the cost of the trip. So when people cancel a ride to immediately book another one, or call several cars at the same time, other customers are forced to wait longer for a taxi or order it at a higher price.
Now the driver will be offered an order first, which is more likely to happen. At the same time, the algorithm will not count forced cancellations, for example, when the car travels much longer than expected when ordering, or stands still for a long time.”
Users will be notified separately about the innovation through the Yandex Taxi application. There you will also be able to find out your cancellation rate; it will gradually appear for all passengers of the company. It is also noted that the new algorithm will help contain travel prices. The head of the competence center of the International Eurasian Forum “Taxi” Stanislav Shvagerus believes that now the service can become much cheaper:
“As for the impact on the overall cost of trips, at first glance, the number of literally idle runs for which the driver pays is removed.
Of course, we need to figure out the economics. In principle, Yandex has a question about how they calculated these algorithms. But so far everything looks logical. This may well have an impact on reducing prices and, in general, will affect the system and the workload of specific taxis.”
Along with the cost of orders, the behavior of some passengers may also change, noted the chairman of the Public Council for Taxi Development, Irina Zaripova: “During bad weather, many complain about the long delivery of the car and the high tariff. How does everything happen on the passenger side?
Many service users, especially in the regions, often order a taxi in several applications or call several dispatch services and organize a “rat race” (there is such a concept within the industry).
That is, they wait to see which car will arrive faster, get into it, and the rest of the orders are cancelled. If a passenger does this often, often, then the likelihood of deliberately ordering from several companies increases.”
The Federal Antimonopoly Service has already announced that it will send a request to Yandex Taxi to establish all the circumstances in connection with the change in the order search algorithm.
