Having cellulite is almost inevitable: between 80 and 90% of women have it. Nothing abnormal, then. However, this “orange peel skin” has become a central problem in the construction of beauty criteria. Women’s magazines, social networks, conversations are full of advice on how to get rid of it. But why has cellulite become aesthetic enemy number one?
This quilting hunt does not come out of nowhere. It finds its origins in a long cultural construction made up of flawed medical research, sociological transition and arbitrary injunctions relayed by the women’s press. The cellulite problem is a complete creation, and records from the past let us know who orchestrated it.
