What motorcycles do Russians choose?

Russians are actively buying motorcycles before the start of the new season. Sales over the past three months have increased by almost 20% year-on-year, according to data from the Avito.Avto portal. This is despite the fact that after the start of hostilities in Ukraine, new motorcycles in Russia became more expensive by about one and a half times. Market participants interviewed by Kommersant FM say that, as in the case of cars, demand has shifted towards Chinese equipment. A large selection of models from China costing up to 1 million rubles has appeared on the market.

And sales have been growing since the beginning of the year, said Dmitry Smolyakov, head of the KTM motorcycle distribution department of the Avtodom group: “There is indeed some recovery compared to last year. This is due to several factors. First of all, people probably had some feeling that after the presidential elections something would change in terms of the exchange rate, prices would rise, and this spurred demand. Many tried to buy motorcycles faster, in February and January.

In addition, our market portfolio has changed significantly – new brands have appeared that offer fairly good products at reasonable prices.

There are quite a lot of Chinese brands that have not been presented before. The most popular are Voge, CFMOTO, brands of Indian origin Bajaj, Racer. If we talk about equipment from China, then, as a rule, all models cost up to 1 million rubles. The weighted average price is 400-500 thousand rubles, but the key difference from European and Japanese brands is that they do not have “heavy motorcycles”, more than 1 thousand cubic meters. cm”.

European, American and Japanese motorcycles are still on sale. Basically, these are the most popular models with an engine capacity of more than 1 thousand cubic meters. see: The leaders in demand are BMW, Ducati, as well as Yamaha and Honda. True, now these models fall into the used category. They are imported through parallel imports with only a short mileage, noted Stanislav Karbachinsky, director of motorcycle sales for the Avilon group:

“If we talk about European models, then the demand is for powerful motorcycles costing from 3 million rubles. Chinese brands are by far the most popular, especially in the 500 class. They cost around 600 thousand rubles. The cost of servicing this equipment varies about the same as its cost. Larger capacity motorcycles will appear closer to the middle of the season. Large lines have already been presented. We looked at what would happen with our Chinese partners. These are analogues of both American engines with a volume of 2 liters and German engines with a volume of 1.2 liters. And by the middle of the year we will already see something.”

According to dealers interviewed by Kommersant FM, there are no problems with servicing European and Japanese motorcycles; the companies still have a stock of necessary consumables. However, in the case of more complex work, the waiting period for spare parts can reach several months. The same applies to some Chinese motorcycles, especially if they are not imported into the country through distributors, explained motorcycle expert Roman Sitnikov:

“Now Benelli, which was known as Italian, or Spanish Rieju, and other brands belong to Chinese companies. They brought them to the European market and now, accordingly, they sell them in Russia.

Probably half of the mid-sized motorcycles of different brands are built on one engine – this is a 500 cc in-line “two”. from Loncin, which is a copy of the Honda engine. These engines are used to produce most of the mid-sized ones. Accordingly, this is a time-tested unit, there are no problems with it. In general, the Chinese now use good components, but this is if we talk about those models that are sold from 0.5 million rubles. and higher.

As for service, those companies that maintain a spare parts warehouse and have well-established logistics from China are doing well. But there is a lot of equipment that is carried by players who have nothing to do with the motorcycle and auto business. That is, they brought the container, sold it, and then this can become a problem for the client: they will have to guess where to look for spare parts, what to order, and so on.”

Traditionally, the motorcycle season in central Russia starts at the end of April. The data center reported that they had already noticed the first motorcyclists on the roads. However, the organization urged people not to rush into switching to two-wheelers. They noted that the weather is still changeable, and at night the air temperature can drop below zero. Because of this, icy conditions form on the roads.
