The German authorities want to give priority right of way on the railway to freight trains with coal, oil and gas. The corresponding decree is being discussed in the federal government, the Die Welt newspaper reported, citing a draft document.
The publication writes that such a measure could lead to the abolition of rail passenger traffic. But the ruling coalition in Germany agrees that freight trains should take priority to supply coal-fired power plants, which have decided to turn back on due to problems with gas supplies.
According to the plan of the authorities, trains with energy carriers will be sent as needed, including during the day. Now freight trains run at night, when there are almost no passenger trains. One freight train transports about 2.8 thousand tons of coal, TASS reports.
In July, the German government allowed coal-fired power plants to reopen. By November 1, the operators of these stations should be provided with enough coal to operate at full capacity for 30 days. Germany stopped coal imports from Russia on August 1, and Russian oil imports are planned to be stopped from December 31
