At the 36th Tokyo International Film Festival, which will be held in October, the world premiere of Alexei German Jr.’s war drama “Air” will take place. The film was included in the main competition of one of the largest festivals in Asia, which is very rare in its history.
The film tells how, during the Great Patriotic War, a unit of young female pilots arrives at an aviation regiment. Work on the painting lasted more than three years. Some joked that the son had been working for years, exactly as his great and uncompromising father had done.
According to Alexey, it was important for him to create not only a deep, emotional and interesting film, but also to convey as much as possible the feeling of documentary events occurring on the screen, the feelings of pilots in the cockpits, life at the airfield and the sincerity of feelings.
The production designer for the film was Alexei’s wife, Elena Okopnaya. She is our only recipient of the Berlinale’s Silver Bear for outstanding artistic contribution to cinema, which she received for Herman’s film about the writer Sergei Dovlatov.
