VTB warned Russians about a new scheme of fraudsters with bank deposits

VTB Bank warned that fraudsters, against the backdrop of an increase in the key rate, began to massively call Russians with offers to place savings on “deposits with increased profitability and cashback from public services and the Central Bank.”

“The new scheme refers to the so-called social engineering, when fraudsters fraudulently provoke bank customers to give out their important personal data on their own or immediately transfer money to the attackers’ account. The difference from other schemes is that the scammers began to present themselves as employees of two well-known government agencies at once and use the popular news about the growth of deposit rates in the largest banks,”— note in a financial institution, specifying that in reality, employees of the Bank of Russia and operators of the public services portal never call citizens and do not ask them to disclose any personal and confidential data.

Immediately after gaining access to the client’s bank account, fraudsters withdraw money and disappear. VTB notes. that after receiving calls from intruders who pose as employees of the Central Bank or public service operators, Russians need to immediately interrupt the conversation and contact the bank. “If there are suspicions that fraudsters have gained access to an account in VTB Online, you can temporarily block it in the online bank in the user profile,” the credit institution adds.

Previously at VTB reportedthat scammers began to steal money from Russians on behalf of social workers. The victims of this fraudulent scheme are mainly pensioners. Fraudsters offer to update the social card, and after consent, they ask for an SMS code that allows you to access the online bank to withdraw money. Basically, elderly clients of Russian banks come across such a scheme. VTB was asked not to provide any confidential data over the phone.
