Chairman of the State Duma, answering a question “Komsomolskaya Pravda”, said that he has a bad attitude towards the fact that Russian individuals and legal entities can freely place advertisements on blogs and websites of foreign agents. In his opinion, such advertising is financing those who conduct “anti-Russian activities.” He promised to make decisions as soon as possible that would change the current situation.
“For some people, apparently, money has no smell. In fact, we are talking about financing those who conduct anti-Russian activities against our country. This situation requires decisions to be made. What we will try to do as quickly as possible,” said the State Duma speaker.
The law on foreign agents appeared in Russian legislation in 2012. The criterion for inclusion in the register was the implementation of political activities while receiving foreign funding. In the summer of 2022, a law was passed according to which persons who do not receive foreign funding but are “supported from abroad” or under “foreign influence” can be included in the register. In July 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that prohibits foreign agents from receiving government property support.
In mid-November, the Ministry of Justice for the first time declared a VPN service, the company Hidemy.network Ltd (HideMy.name service), a foreign agent. According to the ministry, the reason was the dissemination of false information about the policies of the Russian authorities (the company maintains its own channel on Telegram). Hidemy.name is now suing Roskomnadzor to stop blocking its site. For users, paying for a VPN service from a foreign agent can be risky, lawyers point out.
