Vice Chancellor, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck believes that the short-term gain from the launch of Nord Stream 2 would be a diplomatic and political failure for Berlin. In his opinion, it is impossible to increase Germany’s dependence on Russian gas.
“Short-term gain – launching Nord Stream 2, getting gas, experiencing winter better – would be a dramatic political failure because it would trample on every sense of self-worth, value-based attitude, attitude towards Putin,” said Mr Khabek. within the framework of the Open Doors Day at the German Ministry of Economy (quote from TASS).
According to the Vice Chancellor, Nord Stream 1 is now fully operational. He called “Russian propaganda” the information that gas can no longer be pumped through it. Mr. Khabek noted that the introduction of Nord Stream 2 would indirectly indicate that Russia is right. “But that’s not true!” he said.
In addition, the Vice Chancellor believes that Moscow, as in the case of Nord Stream 1, may turn out to be an “unreliable supplier.” According to Robert Habek, Germany’s mistake was to make itself dependent on Russian gas. If you continue to do this now, that “all the lessons of the last months will be forgotten.”
Nord Stream has been operating in a limited mode since June. Gazprom explains this by difficulties in maintaining equipment due to sanctions. Nord Stream 2 was completed but not put into operation. The decision to allow supplies was postponed due to the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.
On gas supplies to Europe – in the material “Kommersant” “Nord Stream” will pause.
