Beijing police have already opened eight cases
Beijing police detained tourists who were using a manicure machine to write on the Great Wall of China. And this is not the first case in Badaling, the most popular section of the Great Wall of China, 75 km from Beijing. Eight cases have already been opened against tourists who not only wrote “Wei was here” with a marker, but made engravings using special devices. Banal vandalism has reached a new level, alas.
The Great Wall of China is one of the largest architectural structures in the world, one of the most visited historical monuments and certainly the longest in length. Every day the wall is “stormed” by thousands of tourists from different countries. And not all of them treat the ancient monument with care.
The most popular site in Badaling is suffering the most. The other day, police detained tourists who brought a manicure machine specifically to leave their “mark in history.” According to Beijing police, this is not the first incident. Eight cases of vandalism of this kind have already been opened.
But if Badaling receives close attention due to its proximity to Beijing and the police manage to track such incidents, then in other areas sometimes much more significant damage remains not immediately noticed.
In early September, two particularly enterprising builders (a 38-year-old man surnamed Zheng and a 55-year-old woman surnamed Wang) used an excavator to make a passage in the Great Wall of China. And everything so as not to make a detour by car. Later the passage was discovered by the police, the builders were found and arrested. Now they will judge. The destruction of the section of the wall built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) is considered irreversible.
According to recent studies, the wall has been reduced by two-thirds: from 6 thousand kilometers, only 2.5 thousand remain.
