US wants to enlist allies to limit exports of chip equipment to China

The United States hopes to strike a deal with allies to limit exports of chip-making equipment to China, said US Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Alan Estevez. According to him, the authorities expect to reach an agreement in the near future.
Mr. Estevez raised this topic in an interview with the CNAS analytical center. He was asked whether the mentioned restrictions on exports to the PRC could be achieved from countries such as Japan and the Netherlands. “We expect a deal to close in the near future,” he replied without giving details (quoted from Reuters).
In October USA tightened restrictions on the export of technology to China by prohibiting American companies and individuals without obtaining an export license from selling semiconductors created using American technology to China. At the same time, American authorities made exceptions for South Korean Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix and for Taiwan’s Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC). This week SK Hynix informed about an “unprecedented” drop in demand for chips.
