RBC: two Russian banks will install terminals for Mir cards abroad

Two large Russian banks will install their POS-terminals in “friendly” countries, designed only to accept Mir cards, reports RBC with reference to sources. It is not known which banks are in question.
One of the banks intends to install POS-terminals in Turkey, the other – in Turkey and the UAE. An unnamed representative of one of the credit institutions said that payment terminals will be installed first of all in hotels and large stores.
Another interlocutor of the publication said that banks can now test such transactions. According to him, the acceptance of cards in POS-terminals of Russian banks is possible according to two schemes:
- The acquiring bank enters into an agreement with an intermediary (payment provider, entrepreneur), who – with a store or hotel (TSP), where the bank’s POS terminal will be installed. When making payments, buyers’ money is credited to the intermediary’s account, he converts rubles into foreign currency and transfers them to the seller’s settlement account.
- A store or a hotel draws up a power of attorney for an intermediary, who contacts a Russian acquiring bank, opens a ruble account for the merchant and signs an acquiring agreement with the bank.
In September, the US Treasury threatened with sanctions for servicing Mir cards. After that, the cards refused to serve banks Sri Lankaseveral banks Turkey and Kyrgyzstan. Ankara informedthat is looking for an alternative to Mir cards and wants to create a Russian-Turkish payment system.
