US authorities recommended checking another Boeing 737 MAX model – Kommersant

US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) decided on Sunday, January 21, that due to the depressurization of the Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 on January 6, carriers should conduct additional checks of another model of the American aircraft concern – the 737 MAX 900ER. This is due to the fact that the aircraft of both models have a similar configuration, which involves installing a plug on the emergency exit hatch in the middle of the cabin.
Let us recall that on January 6, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 passenger plane, en route from Portland to Ontario, was forced to make an emergency landing at the departure airport after the emergency exit hatch plug fell off, which led to depressurization of the cabin at an altitude of about 5 km. After the incident, the F.A.A. decided to suspend operation of selected Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft for inspection purposes. The FAA’s order affects 171 Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft, almost all of which are in the United Airlines and Alaska Airlines fleet.
January 8 FAA approved an inspection procedure for Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft, after which, in the absence of malfunctions and non-compliance with safety requirements, airlines will be able to resume flights on these aircraft. But later the regulator tightened requirements for Boeing. On January 15, the company itself announced additional inspections of the 737 MAX 9 aircraft operated by five airlines, as well as at its own factories and the factories of Spirit AeroSystems, one of the concern’s key suppliers.
