US authorities have approved new standards for the automotive industry – Kommersant

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the final version (.pdf) emission standards for various pollutants for the automotive industry. The new norms stipulate that by 2032, at least 56% of car sales in the country will be electric vehicles. At the same time, the share of hybrid and other partially electric cars should be at least 13%.

The Joe Biden administration calls new measures the most ambitious plan to transition the population to electric transport. However, the final version of the document actually sets much less stringent requirements than the EPA offered last year. Then the agency expected that by 2032 the share of electric vehicles in new sales would be 66%. However, even in its current form, the target looks quite ambitious, given that in 2022 the share of electric vehicles was only 5.8%, and in 2023 it increased only to 7.6%.

The new emission standards apply to passenger cars and commercial vehicles (excluding trucks) from model years 2027–2032. Compared to the current standard, emissions limits for passenger cars will be reduced by 50% for the 2026 model year and by 44% for medium-duty vehicles. In total, the EPA projects that the new standards will avoid the emission of more than 7 billion tons of carbon dioxide and bring nearly $100 billion in annual benefits to the economy.
