Uniper to launch backup coal-fired power plant in Germany

The German energy concern Uniper will launch a backup thermal power plant (TPP) Heyden 4 on coal on August 29 to provide the country with energy this winter, reported in the press office of the company. Heyden 4 is located near the city of Minden in eastern Germany. It is specified that the estimated capacity of the thermal power plant (875 MW) will be limited due to the reduced capacity of rail transportation of coal to the station. With the appearance of additional transport capacities, restrictions on transportation will be lifted. It is clarified that Uniper has the opportunity to withdraw the decision to return the thermal power plant to the market at any time, but only upon notification of this four weeks in advance.
In 2020, Uniper ceased commercial operation of the thermal power plant as part of a decarbonisation plan that aims to minimize CO2 emissions from electricity generation in Europe by 2035. In July last year, Heyden 4 was thought to be closed, but the Federal Grid Agency (German regulator) recognized the TPP as systemically important and necessary for the “reliable supply” of the region. Since the middle of last year, Heyden 4 has been a backup power plant, but has not produced electricity for the market.
Since August, Germany has stopped receiving coal from Russia in accordance with the restrictions that have come into force under the fifth package of sanctions, and from December 31 it must stop importing Russian oil. An embargo on Russian gas has not yet been introduced.
