Uniper cuts 2022 loss to €19bn

Yesterday, February 1, the German energy company Uniper informedthat its loss in 2022, according to preliminary estimates, was less than in the first nine months of that year. Uniper’s net loss for the year amounted to €19.1 billion against €40.3 billion in the first nine months. It was possible to reduce the loss thanks to a significant decrease in gas prices at the end of last year: from September to December they fell by half. The company also ended 2021 with a loss – then it amounted to €4.2 billion.
Uniper’s problems stem from the fact that last year Gazprom drastically reduced and then completely stopped gas supplies to it, because of this, it had to buy more expensive gas from other sources. Since the summer, the German authorities have provided multibillion-dollar aid packages to Uniper several times, and in September a decision was made to nationalization companies. In November Uniper filed a lawsuit to Gazprom in the International Arbitration Court in Stockholm, demanding that the Russian company compensate it for losses due to underdelivered gas totaling €11.6 billion. Now Uniper estimates such losses for the entire 2022 at €13.2 billion.
Final loss data and other results for 2022 will be released by Uniper on February 17, when its annual financial report is published.
