Ukraine discusses insurance of grain carriers with world insurers
[ad_1]
Ukraine is close to concluding an agreement on insurance of ships with grain, sailing to the Black Sea ports and back. Deputy Minister of Economy Oleksandr Griban said Financial Times (FT) that a deal is “currently being worked out and actively discussed” between the relevant ministries, as well as local banks and international insurance groups, including Lloyd’s of London.
The insurance scheme could be put into operation as early as next month. It is assumed that from five to 30 ships can be involved in it, which will follow through the “dangerous place” in Ukrainian waters.
The details are yet to be finalized, but according to FT sources, the scheme is aimed at protecting ships entering and leaving Ukrainian ports from damage. Risks can be divided among themselves by insurers and a local state bank. As Mr. Griban specified, they can also attract a state fund created for the repair of Ukrainian roads, which is financed by a tax on the sale of fuel.
On July 18, Russia stopped participating in the grain deal, which involved the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea. August 16 the first ship from Odessa took advantage grain corridor opened by Ukraine. Russian authorities also study alternatives to the grain deal. Ankara, meanwhile, wants to persuade Moscow to reanimate the grain deal.
