Twitter has blocked the accounts of journalists, accusing them of publishing data about the location of Elon Musk

On the evening of Thursday, December 15, Twitter blocked accounts of several American journalists, including from publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and CNN. Twitter has not officially explained this decision, but the owner of the service, Elon Musk, wrote that this was due to the publication of his location data. “The same rules for publishing personal information apply to journalists as to everyone else,” he wrote. “It’s completely normal to criticize me all day, but revealing my location in real time and endangering my family is not normal.”
On Wednesday, Twitter announced new rules that will now block anyone who shares links to sites that track someone’s location in real time. On the same day, Mr. Musk sued on Jack Sweeney, the owner of the @ElonJet Twitter account – he created a bot that reported on the movements of the billionaire’s plane. The lawsuit, he said, was filed after Mr. Sweeney pursued the car in which the son of Mr. Musk was.
Jack Sweeney’s account was blocked, and accounts that had links to tracking the planes of Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and others were also blocked. Some media, whose journalists’ accounts were also blocked, including CNN and NYT, criticized the blocking decision: for example, in NYT it was called “doubtful and unsuccessful”.
