Turkey is increasingly importing from other countries and then exporting 45 types of dual-use goods to Russia. Writes about this Financial Times (FT) citing sources. These goods include microchips, telecommunications equipment and components for it, telescopic tubes, etc. These are goods that are subject to export controls in the USA, EU, UK and Japan and which cannot be imported directly into Russia.
The US authorities, the newspaper claims, are expressing concern about this fact, as evidenced, in particular, by the visit this week to Turkey of US Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Brian Nelson, who specializes in tracking the financing of terrorism, violations of export restrictions, etc. He is going to discuss with the Turkish authorities “efforts to prevent, disrupt, and investigate trade and financial activities from which Russia benefits” in terms of the military conflict in Ukraine. This is Mr. Nelson’s second such trip to Turkey recently.
According to the FT, in the first nine months of 2023, Turkey exported 45 types of dual-use goods to Russia and five CIS countries, which, according to US authorities, are of “high priority” for Russia. The total value of such exports has tripled compared to the same period in 2022, amounting to $158 million. By comparison, such exports averaged $28 million per year between 2015 and 2021, according to the FT, which cites Trade Data Monitor estimates. year. As for the five CIS countries in question – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan – it is assumed that from them these goods can also be imported into Russia.
