Turkish terminal Dortyol refused to accept Russian oil due to sanctions

Global Terminal Services (GTS), which operates Turkey’s Dortyol oil terminal, said the terminal will no longer accept Russian oil amid Western sanctions against Russia. GTS statement conveys Reuters.
“GTS has decided to cease all possible ties with Russian oil and accordingly told its customers at the end of February 2024 that, even if there are no violations of any laws, regulations or sanctions, it will not accept products of Russian origin or any products loaded from Russia,” GTS said in a statement.
The company’s statement noted that all previous operations complied with the sanctions regime, including the price limit established by the G7 countries. GTS called the decision to suspend operations with Russian petroleum products an additional measure to the new sanctions restrictions. Russian cargo declared before the ban was introduced at the end of February will be accepted by the terminal, the company clarified.
The last tanker to unload at the terminal arrived on February 19, according to data analytics company Kpler. It delivered 511 thousand barrels of diesel fuel from the Russian Baltic port of Primorsk.
Dortyol terminal is located in Hatay province in southern Turkey. Reuters notes that in 2023, exports from the terminal increased fivefold compared to 2021, amounting to 24.7 million barrels (of which 11.74 million barrels were from Russia). Turkey then became one of the largest importers of Russian oil from 2022, after the European Union imposed sanctions. Frequent destinations for oil exported from Dortyol were the Greek ports of Corinth, Elefsis and Thessaloniki, as well as the oil trading, refining and storage centers of Rotterdam and Antwerp.
