Trouble cannot be avoided – Russian rock warns

In the second week of September, according to the law of the market, show business came out of vacation, and away we go … Rock and roll warms up the audience in the cold weather with a hot stringed cocktail: Garik Sukachev, “Mill”, “Underwood”, “Papin Olympos” . And all about the “original autumn” …

Garik Sukachev, in his unique style, plays the card of luxurious old man’s withering a la Tom Waits. It warns that it will only get worse and “you can’t avoid trouble” in the new track “There is no need to wait”. Like any potential hit, the song is new, but certainly similar to everything we’ve heard from him before. At the same time, the track is surprisingly reminiscent of “The Road to Hell” by Chris Rea. Not only in sound, but also in content, because the composition of the Western musician is called “Road to Hell” and tells about the mental crisis of the protagonist. But this, of course, has nothing to do with the Russian rock musician. One way or another, rock in many ways became a follower of the blues. Garik’s text was written about 10 years ago and calmly rested up with other unpublished poems in the artist’s workbook. The music was created for a different text, but did not stick with it, so it was also in limbo. The melody was conceived as a light Californian blues, and this is heard in it. But it turned out that a simple text does not fit on it. But the complex, philosophical, psychological, filled with gloomy forebodings and the way out of melancholy found as a result … This reflects the generally optimistic mood of Garik’s work. Even in sadness and hopelessness, he smiles.

“Smoke” of literature

This collection of riddles in literature was written by the Underwood group. On their fresh track “Smoke” you can test new and old friends for intelligence or prepare high school students for the exam. But the Crimean rockers did it not out of snobbery, of course, as is the case with pseudo-rappers from Foggy Albion, but out of love for art, which imbued their already intellectual work as a whole. The names of Russian poets are not named here, of course, otherwise what kind of riddles would they be. Here you can meet the Black River, where the fatal shot in the “sun of Russian poetry” of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin happened, and the execution of the 20th century, and Mayakovsky’s love boat broken by everyday life, and an open pack of LM on Morton Street, where Brodsky lived, and a rope in Elabuga and “Angletere” by Tsvetaeva and Yesenin, respectively, here is the broken “ridge” of Mandelstam. From all these enumerations and the caustic “smoke from the trunks” of the Motherland, which “does not kiss, so cripple”, just look, tears will pour over the edge of the faceted glass of memories of the fates of great poets. The song is ideal for the autumn blues, which Pushkin once loved so much.

The single “Smoke” kindles even more curiosity in anticipation of the new album “Beyond the Horizon”, which is currently being worked on in the studio. For example, it is especially interesting what the well-known talent Roots is working on this time with Underwood, who recently flashed on the group’s video blog on social networks and was noticed by fans of the team.

Back to fairy tale

The premiere of the single “Heart of the Hawk” is also organic for the old fabulous sound of the Melnitsa group, like California road blues for Garik Sukachev. Natalya O’Shea likes to include representatives of various fairy-tale or mystical fauna in her work: from a night mare to a snake, a wolfhound, of course, a raven and a griffin, she also sang about a blackbird along with our Boris Borisovich. What is happening with the hawk this time is completely impossible to understand from the song, but the lyrics just sound beautiful, and this excuses its absolute incoherence. Sometimes the meaning of beauty lies in beauty itself.

In the video for this track, the heroine, played by Helavisa, is burned by religious fanatics, and then the same hawk flies over the ashes. “The song is built on the theme of Sergei Vishnyakov, which immediately seemed very cinematic to me in terms of “the man in black went into the desert, and the shooter followed him,” says Natalia.

Indeed, at the beginning of the song there is a line: “You fly alone, raven, I follow you …” Apparently, here the black man and the shooter are meant. Sergey Vishnyakov, by the way, one of the musicians of the Melnitsa group, in the video brings a torch to the fire, on which a mysterious femme fatale in a red dress will be burned. “But in my head then the Czech Hussites were walking with might and main on their war carts, and therefore the song turned out to be much more medieval-Slavic than its western basis suggested. Our listeners are always waiting for “the return of the good old “Melnitsa”, and perhaps this track will delight and console them,” the singer comments.

She guessed that listeners on the Internet, if not “rejoiced”, then at least write approving comments with might and main about that same fabulous, medieval sound of the Mill, which many have missed over the past year. The group performed with much more hard and technological arrangements than annoyed the old guard of fans.

Chemistry and life

The new old-school punk blast from the teenage flagship Papin Olympos is made with a stadium scale and the refrain “Forget me, but remember.” It’s actually called that. The two-minute jumping joy is not devoid of the charismatic poetry of youthful short-lived novels: “Chemistry will corrode telephone lines … / You and I, intertwined with thoughts, tied in knots with fingers … / I know that we are worth more than just a piece of the past.”

A track about parting, inspiring to meet again, under which, like leaves from the trees of memory, the leaves of memories of adventures from the past fall. Rhythmic beautiful crap in the style of “chemistry and life”, from which the usual foam of days is whipped. Memories, as you know, do not have a statute of limitations and over time acquire new details, which is what various nostalgic songs like this one are designed for.

In terms of tempo and stadium scale, the new track from the Papin Olympos group resembles the amazing Billy Talent hit “Fallen Leaves”. True, the fallen leaves that Canadian rockers sing about do not evoke either nostalgia or good memories. Yes, and at the moment this comparison is still too complimentary for our rock band, but the potential of the “Olympos” can no longer be covered by anything.

Only the most self-confident or risky ones usually release songs when God puts it on their souls, without looking at the calendar. The rest meticulously plan and calculate the right moment. Creativity is creativity, and music is a commodity, and the market dictates here. The beginning of autumn is a hot musical time, despite the fact that the thermometer is slowly and inevitably dropping down maliciously … The audience is warming up and thirsting for new products. There is still a lot of interesting things ahead, the new season is just beginning.
