The Bolshoi Theater opens its 247th season with P.I. Tchaikovsky’s opera The Queen of Spades on the Historical Stage. Such is the tradition. Another tradition is also unchanged: before the opening of the next season, as always, the gathering of the troupe, at which they sum up the results of the past season, announce plans for the upcoming one.
The auditorium of the historical building of the Bolshoi shines with whiteness and gilding, makes noise like a disturbed beehive. Employees and artists came back from vacation at the end of August, but there is always something to discuss. In the hall are theater stars, newcomers who will work at the Bolshoi from this season. Graduates of ballet schools enrolled 9 people. There is also a replenishment of the stellar composition. According to the results of the international competition of ballet dancers held at the Bolshoi Theater in the summer, the artistic director of the ballet troupe Mahar Vaziev successfully negotiated the transfer from Munich to the Bolshoi of the unique dancer Dmitry Vyskubenko, who won a silver medal. The dancer, in fact, will become one of those who will open the new ballet season at the Bolshoi with the ballet Swan Lake, appearing as Prince Siegfried on September 22. “In the end, I decided to move,” says Dmitry Vyskubenko. “My goal is to reach the heights of my art, and the Bolshoi Theater is the foundation for a ballet dancer, allowing me to grow into a great professional.”
Under the guns of television cameras, Vladimir Urin enters the hall. “Cinema come on!” – says the general director of the Bolshoi Theater. Invariably for a long time, ever since he came to the theater, the gathering of the troupe begins with a small film, a kind of ironic digest of the main events of the backstage life of the past season. This tradition has not been changed this time either. The footage of the film skit consisted of cutting rehearsals, premieres of opera and ballet performances shown during the season, and the voice acting was from Soviet comedies.
After the film, the directors of the theater and honored guests take seats on the presidium. “I am very glad to see everyone in good health,” says Vladimir Urin, general director, and begins by listing the numbers: “The Bolshoi showed 685 performances, 235 ballets, and twice as many operas last season.” Then we moved on to discussing plans, with which the Bolshoi never delays, regularly announcing at the end of the season. So the plans are the same, but with one significant adjustment: as it became known at the end of August, director Alexander Molochnikov will not participate in the production of the operas Francesca da Rimini by Sergei Rachmaninoff and The Florentine Tragedy by Alexander von Zemlinsky. They will be performed in concert.
In the 247th season, two opera and three ballet premieres are expected. With the restoration of the legendary “Chopiniana” by Mikhail Fokine, the ballet will be the first to “shoot”. This premiere is to take place on November 30 at the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. “Chopiniana” is included in the repertoire for a reason. This year, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Diaghilev is widely celebrated, and it was with this ballet in 1909 that the great impresario opened his historic Russian Seasons in Paris, which, in fact, glorified the “Russian ballet” all over the world and formed this famous now every cultured person has a brand in the minds of the public. As for the Bolshoi, this ballet is connected here primarily with the work of Galina Ulanova. The celebrated ballerina shone in Chopiniana throughout her dancing career. On December 29, 1960, in partnership with Vladimir Vasiliev, the legend of Russian ballet even said goodbye to the audience as a performer – the great ballerina ended her career with the same ballet with which she began her stage career.
The second act of the program will also feature the Grand Classical Pas from the ballet Paquita choreographed by Marius Petipa, the second premiere of the Bolshoi in the current season. Yuri Burlaka staged this fragment from the ballet Paquita for the Bolshoi Theater back in 2008, when he was the artistic director of the ballet here. Now, 14 years later, he will restore this Grand Pas.
The first major opera premiere, Arthur Rubinstein’s The Demon (conductor Artem Abashev, stage director Vladislavs Nastavshevs), will take place on the New Stage at the end of the year, on December 22. And if the “young voices of the Bolshoi Theater” will be mainly occupied here, then the next premiere of the Bolshoi will be given to the masters: Giuseppe Verdi’s Il trovatore will take place on the Historical Stage in March. However, the conductor-producer of this premiere has not yet been determined, and Roman Feodori from Krasnoyarsk will be the director-producer. Instead of the opera that Molochnikov was supposed to stage, Berlioz’s Benedict and Beatrice will be staged.
The only full-fledged ballet premiere at the Bolshoi in the opening season will be the two-act Queen of Spades to music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Yuri Krasavin, which is scheduled to be shown on the Historical Stage on April 20. In the Bolshoi, the ballet to the music of Tchaikovsky “The Queen of Spades” has already been performed with great success. In 2001, it was staged by the great French choreographer Roland Petit. Now the choreographer of the performance will be Yuri Possokhov, and it will be the seventh production of this choreographer at the Bolshoi Theater, where he previously presented such ballets as Magritomania, Cinderella, Classical Symphony, A Hero of Our Time, ” Nureyev”, “The Seagull”. The artistic director of the ballet troupe Makhar Vaziev spoke about the mysterious premiere, but did not name either its name or the names of the choreographers. Apparently, these will be his foreign colleagues who have agreed to continue cooperation with the Bolshoi Theater.
