The United Auto Workers (UAW) has announced expansion strikes against the three largest automobile manufacturers in the United States. As of today, almost 7 thousand workers have gone on strike at the largest Stellantis plant in the United States, which assembles the very popular full-size Ram 1500 pickup trucks in the country. Now the total number of workers striking in the United States at Ford, General Motors (GM) and Stellantis plants has exceeded 40 thousand.
This is the first escalation in the confrontation between the UAW and the three largest American automobile manufacturers in the last two weeks. And the first in more than a month extension strikes specifically at Stellantis factories. Strike by Ford, GM and Stellantis workers started September 15 due to the expiration of the next employment contract. The workers want to sign a new three-year contract on improved terms: increased wages, optimization of pension plans, etc. All this time, the UAW has been negotiating with companies, and periodically it is possible to achieve some improvements. However, no contracts have yet been signed and strikes continue.
Stellantis expressed disturbance because the UAW extended its strike against the company, which offered a 23% wage increase, an almost 50% increase in pension plan contributions, and a number of other demands. According to Stellantis, they received no response to this proposal, and instead, “the UAW has chosen to cause further harm to both the entire auto industry and our local, national and state economies.” Meanwhile, according to the analytical company Cox Automotive, finished product inventories at the Stellantis plant in the suburbs of Detroit, where the strike has now begun, will last for more than 100 more days.
