Total and Eni discover large gas field offshore Cyprus

French TotalEnergies and Italian Eni announced about the discovery of a “significant” gas field 160 km from the coast of Cyprus. The deposit was discovered in the Cronos-1 well of the sixth block of the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus. According to La Repubblicathe reserves of the deposit are estimated at 70 billion cubic meters.

The companies started drilling the exploration well Cronos-1 in May this year. Local media reported about the discovery of large gas reserves in the sixth block in early August. However, before the official confirmation of the information, Total and Eni first had to transfer all information about the deposit to the Ministry of Energy of Cyprus, which is why the announcement of the find was made only two weeks later.

According to a press release, the companies plan to drill another exploration well in the sixth block to try to find additional reserves of resources, as well as determine the best option for developing the field.
