The customer of the construction of a nuclear power plant in Finland filed a lawsuit against Rosatom for 2 billion euros

The Finnish company Fennovoima, which terminated the contract for the construction of the Hanhikivi-1 nuclear power plant with the Rosatom structure RAOS Project in May, filed a lawsuit against the state corporation for a total amount of about 2 billion euros. It is noted that the amount includes, among other things, the return of an advance payment in the amount of 800 million euros and interest payments of 200 million euros. Fennovoima also expects that “Rosatom» file a counterclaim for the same amount.

At the end of May, the Finnish company Fennovoima withdrew application for a license for the construction of the Hanhikivi-1 NPP. Prior to this, in early May, Fennovoima announced the termination of the contract with the state corporation “Rosatom» by the Finnish company RAOS Project for the construction of the Hanhikivi-1 NPP. Fennovoima said work has been delayed in recent years and the situation has been exacerbated by fighting in Ukraine.

Rosatom then declared “sincere disappointment” with the decision of the Finnish side, drawing attention to the fact that Fennovoima’s management took this step “without a detailed discussion at the level of project shareholders.” 34% of the project is owned by a company that is 100% owned by Rosatom, the report said.

In June, the head of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev declaredthat the state-owned company will try to recover the funds after the termination of the contract.

The cost of the project with the participation of Rosatom was estimated at 7-7.5 billion euros. It was expected that construction would begin in 2023, and commissioning of the plant in 2029.
