Russian business has developed four strategies for adapting to work under sanctions, a study was conducted at the Higher School of Economics. The first approach involves cutting costs, investments, laying off staff and employees, and cutting down the range. The second way is to maintain investments, but at the same time simplify the products. The third strategy involves changing supply chains, searching for new suppliers of raw materials, materials and components. This usually requires changes in management and logistics. And the last one – the innovation strategy – involves the development of new products and technologies, the introduction of digital solutions, as well as attracting qualified personnel and entering new markets.
“Kommersant FM” talked with players from different segments of the economy and found out that farmers had the hardest time, and vodka producers are going through the crisis the best.
Roman Sabirzhanov, HotConsulting company (launches hotels): “One of the main problems we faced was the sale of hotel services. Foreign online travel agencies were monopolists in this area. Russian hotels were tied to these resources and, in fact, lost access to them overnight. So how to build marketing now? But today everything has changed. And I would even say that the Russian hotel business has only benefited from the departure of foreign aggregators. Hoteliers began to earn 10-15 percent more.”
Dmitry Matveev, owner of the Kabosh group of companies (produces signature cheeses and other products): “Six months before this situation, we bought equipment for almost $10 million. Naturally, we counted on its warranty service and the supply of spare parts. And now we have to buy them three to four times more expensive. The main problem is that if there are no components, the combine can be idle for a month and a half. In conditions of harvesting and preparing feed in summer and autumn, this is like death. When we talk about agricultural machinery, this is a problem that cannot be solved only by business; this requires government support.”
Pavel Pobedkin, owner of the Kristall distillery (produces vodka and liqueurs): “The components for production are a label, a cork, a bottle, a box. All this is within the scope of Russian suppliers. If earlier, for example, in order to make some beautiful label, the simplest solution was to purchase foreign raw materials, European in the first place, beautiful textured paper, and so on, then when the story with SVO began, suppliers were forced to replace their logistics chains and include a creative component. For little money they have learned to completely imitate expensive European raw materials. For us, this means cutting costs and more interesting and creative approaches that the labelers themselves have come up with.”
According to the Higher School of Economics, sanctions affected at least two-thirds of Russian enterprises. 53% of companies felt a negative effect from them, and 7% of players noted positive aspects. The most protected from the crisis were enterprises closed to the domestic market, notes “Kommersant”.
The low level of competition is consistent with the idea of simplifying products, and the motivation for innovation, given the already increased demand after the departure of foreign competitors, is de facto absent.
