“These are not masterpieces”: an expert from the Pushkin Museum spoke about the value of Nina Moleva’s collection bequeathed to Putin

Leonardo da Vinci, Van Dyck, Titian – the widow of the avant-garde artist Elia Belyutina, art critic Nina Moleva named many of the first names that are supposedly included in the family collection. Nina Moleva, who recently died at the age of 98, all these items, according to her will, go to the country and personally to President Vladimir Putin. Now an expert commission created by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation will have to assess the real value of the items, which Moleva herself estimated at no less than 2 billion dollars. MK spoke with one of the experts who will study the Moleva-Belyutin collection – Victoria Markova, chief researcher at the Pushkin Museum.
– Victoria Emmanuilovna, many who have seen the Belyutin-Moleva collection doubt the authenticity of the items. Have you seen her? What can you say about her?
– I saw publications and photographs. I can say that Nina Moleva said that her collection is full of first names – Leonardo, Titian, Van Dyck. This is not true, these are not masterpieces. Maybe there really are old paintings there, but we are not talking about the artists that Moleva named. You see, there are many paintings, say, from the 17th century, but they are not of museum level, but very average, there are many of them at auctions, but they sell very poorly. Fakes are modern things painted to resemble one of the old artists. The situation here is probably different: these are old things, but do not have museum value.
– What are the regulations for their research? What is next for the commission assembled by the Ministry of Culture?
“They immediately called me from the Ministry of Culture and asked me to join the commission assessing this collection. It will include various experts specializing in different areas. We’ll start in a couple of weeks. As a result, a document will be created where we will describe the value of the work.
