The volume of cash in circulation in Russia in 2023 exceeded 18 trillion rubles, reported Central Bank. The figure for the year increased by 2 trillion rubles.
The Central Bank recorded increased demand for cash from January to September last year. The return of funds to the banking system began in September. The regulator attributes this to “increasing the attractiveness of bank deposits for the population due to rising rates.” There was another surge in cash before the New Year holidays.
In the total volume of cash, the shares of five-ruble and ten-ruble banknotes increased to 3% and 7%, respectively. The Bank of Russia explained this by resuming the printing of such banknotes.
At the beginning of 2023, the volume of cash in circulation was at the level of 16.39 trillion rubles. In October, the figure reached 18.47 trillion rubles. By the beginning of December it dropped to 18.04 trillion rubles, and by the beginning of January 2024 it increased to 18.43 trillion rubles. In the total number of banknotes, the largest number of banknotes is in the denomination of 5 thousand rubles. (38%), followed by banknotes with a face value of 1 thousand rubles. (17%), 100 rub. (15%), 50 rub. (8%).
