Vernik is a well-known surname. Two twin brothers –
Igor and Vadim. One is a famous artist, the other is an equally famous journalist. The artist is fifteen minutes older than the journalist, and therefore the Verniks are not twins, but fraternal twins. But the point is not in the title: brothers are all the same, one is responsible for the other. Always nearby – at the Moscow Art Theater, on television and in life.
We asked ourselves: what were Werniks like in childhood to become what they became? And they became the pride of the national theater, cinema and journalism. But how similar are 2Vernik2 internally? As we managed to find out, from childhood the brothers had only the nickname in common – Wernicus-Copernicus. Well, each of them can be considered a discoverer in some way.
The eldest, Igorek, loved to play football and until a certain moment dreamed of a sports career. But the youngest, Vadik, constantly put together albums about the theater: he compiled clippings from newspapers, magazines, mounted them with photographs of stars – albums about the Moscow Art Theater, not knowing that years later he would serve in it, about the Bolshoi Theater, Sovremennik and the Theater named after . Mossovet. Once, however, in order not to damage the honor of his family, he tried to go onto the football field – it ended in a funny thing. Vadik scored a goal… against his team. That’s why the team was “glad”, and brother Igor, despite the latter’s authority, was forbidden to be allowed on the field. It seemed that the topic of football was closed forever for Wernick Jr., however… Several years passed, and he rehabilitated the name by making an hour-long film not about anyone, but about Pele himself. The world football star in Wernick’s frame played the guitar and sang his songs.
At secondary school No. 287, on Godovikova Street, the brothers studied approximately the same: mathematics, physics and chemistry were clearly not their strong point. But they showed a penchant for humanitarian subjects and made progress. However, the eldest, Igor, for some reason suffered more than the younger one – the teacher regularly gave him a bad grade in algebra, and the younger one got away with fright. But the mathematician had a gentler option in store for Vadik. “Sit down, I’m not happy with you today,” she said reproachfully to the teenager.
At the same time, both Wernicks studied piano at a music school – where their mother taught in a preschool group. And her eldest, I must say, succeeded in the musical department – he was transferred to the eighth grade “for the especially gifted.” And the excellent student taught himself to play the guitar.
Interestingly, from birth the twins were not dressed alike. Even if an item was bought in duplicate, it would certainly be in different colors. This was the principled position of the parents, especially the father, the outstanding radio director Emil Wernick. His father, who recently passed away at the age of 96, played an important role in raising his sons.
Who to be? So the brothers didn’t have a question after finishing school. Already by the tenth grade, Igor had made his choice – only an artist, of course, a famous one. His bright prospects in the difficult acting profession were confirmed by his victories at city reading competitions. Igor entered all theater universities, and was accepted everywhere – except Shchuka. But he chose the Moscow Art Theater School.
Vadim also raved about the theater, but from the audience side – he was preparing to enter the theater studies department at GITIS. At the colloquium they wanted to give him a try, as one teacher during the discussion said: “What a frivolous applicant is coming to us – this Vernik is either a theater student or an acting student…” Fortunately, someone stood up, saying that, in fact, this two brothers.
And now the lovebird brothers have their anniversary. What will they wish for each other?
Vadim: “For Igor, the word “no” does not exist, nothing is impossible. If he wants something, he will definitely achieve it. I am learning this from Igor. I would like to wish my brother that the harmony that I think he has today continues! Harmony in both personal and creative life!!! And to celebrate an anniversary on your native stage, in such a powerful role as Arbenin, is happiness! I’m proud of my brother!
Igor: — My brother, as a boy, from the age of eight or nine, lived in the theater. And in the magazine he realizes himself as a journalist, and in the Moscow Art Theater he realizes his childhood dream. Doing what you love is a great privilege and a miracle. I wish him that everything continues like this. I love my brother very much, and for me his success is greater than my own. I’m very proud of him!
