The US Film Academy will change the requirements for nomination for the “Oscar” from 2025

Pictures nominated for the award in the category “Best Film” will now be in the box office for more than 7 days in a row. This decision was made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to support cinemas and highlight their importance in the growing popularity of streaming services.

According to the magazine The Hollywood Reporter, the requirements come into force on January 10, 2025. From now on, distributors will be required to provide the academy with a film release plan indicating a longer film run. Film rentals must end no later than January 24, 2025.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the innovation could affect the earnings of overseas distributors, who usually do not keep films in theaters in large cities for so long. However, Academy CEO and President Bill Kramer and Janet Young said in a statement that all stakeholders were consulted in developing the new requirements.

According to Bill Kramer, long-term film releases “will encourage viewers to explore creativity in theaters” because “cinema should be experienced as intended: in a movie theater full of people, on a big screen, with state-of-the-art projection, sound and light.”

In 2020 American Film Academy introduced a list of criteria that films must meet to receive the Oscar for Best Picture, starting in 2024. In particular, a representative of racial minorities should play a leading role in the background. At least 30% of secondary roles must be women, representatives of racial, ethnic, sexual minorities and people with disabilities.
