One of the oldest Russian tour operators, Vedi Group, is closing down due to a series of unfavorable external circumstances. The company specialized in tours to Eastern Europe, which are not easy to conduct now, and it is not always possible to quickly reorganize to other destinations, market participants explain. The liability of the tour operator is insured for 11 million rubles, obligations are to be fulfilled to 1.3 thousand tourists.

The tour operator “Vedi Group” stops its activities due to the inability to fulfill all obligations for the implementation of the tourist product, it is said in company message. The decision is explained by the events of the last three years: restrictions due to the pandemic, the closure of flights with EU countries, sanctions, problems with foreign exchange payments and the growth of exchange rates. “Vedi” will continue to work until the completion of the payment of insurance compensation, information about it will be published on the website on Friday and later.

The Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) stated that at the time of the suspension of activities, Vedi Group had obligations to 1.3 thousand tourists, including tours sold before the pandemic.

The liability of three legal entities of the tour operator is insured by AlfaStrakhovanie JSC. The size of the security of Vedi Group LLC and Vedi Club LLC is 500 thousand rubles each, Vedi Club Ural LLC is 10 million rubles. These funds may not be enough to fully pay all customers. In terms of a person, each tourist can count on 8.1 thousand rubles, which is lower than the usual cost of the tour. But part of the funds may still be in the personal responsibility fund of the tour operator.

Vedi is one of the oldest tour operators in Russia, operating since 2002. According to the Unified State Register of Legal Entities, the Moscow Lead Group is owned on an equal basis by Lyudmila Blinkova and the company’s CEO Elena Kareva, Lead Group Ural is owned and headed by Vera Timofeeva, and Lead Club is owned by Valery Kazantsev. ATOR executive director Maya Lomidze says the tour operator held a small market share.

Dmitry Gorin, vice-president of the Russian Union of Travel Industry, says that Vedi initially specialized in European destinations, primarily Hungary and the Czech Republic. “Here his share was significant, but now it turned out to be, if not impossible, then extremely difficult to work with these areas,” he says. Kommersant’s interlocutor at the tourist market notes that the tour operator tried to rebuild the business, but this is not so easy to do. “Foreign sightseeing destinations, especially for budget bus tours, are now, in principle, not very many, and you need to work with all of them for a long time to get a good flow,” says a Kommersant source.
