The State Duma channel “Duma TV” filed a lawsuit against Google due to the blocking of the YouTube channel. The Moscow Arbitration Court accepted the application for proceedings. Duma TV demands to restore access to video hosting and collect a court penalty.
Channel filed lawsuit back in early July, but it was not accepted for production due to violations. On 4 August the court found that the applicant had remedied the violations. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for October 19.
Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the State Duma committee on information policy, believes that the channel has prospects for this lawsuit. “In a similar situation, the court sided with the Russian TV channel Tsargrad, and YouTube was forced to pay a penalty in the amount of 1 billion rubles,” the deputy wrote in Telegram.
The Dumy TV channel was blocked on YouTube in April amid Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. it sparked discussion about blocking video hosting. Thus, State Duma Vice Speaker Pyotr Tolstoy urged to take such measures against YouTube that “it was impossible to enter under any VPN.”
The Russian “daughter” of Google LLC “Google” earlier filed an application about bankruptcy due to the arrest of the company’s bank accounts after several lost claims for tens of billions of rubles. Despite this, the company’s free services – search engine, YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Play and others will continue to work in Russia.
