The series "Idol" with the daughter of Johnny Depp Lily-Rose failed miserably

Why the movie didn’t become the sensation of the season

The series “Idol” was called one of the most intriguing projects of the year. Passions were expected no weaker than those that boiled around “Euphoria” and the triumph of Lily-Rose Depp, who played one of the main roles. But in the end, landslide ratings from critics, no less cool reception from the public and five episodes instead of the six promised. Although the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis in this situation is rather even in the black.

No other HBO series has fallen so low. After the premiere of the first two episodes in Cannes, users of the popular Rotten Tomatoes portal put Idol at only seventeen percent. Probably, the series, which are conceived as scandalous, cannot be liked by everyone at once, but not to the same extent. Moreover, the plot and the participants in the action could well intrigue.

The main characters of the series are a pop singer (Lily-Rose Depp) who is going through hard times and who imagines herself to be something like a sorcerer, the club owner (Abel Tesfaye). The ardent romance of these characters perfectly lay on the ground of permissiveness and wealth, so that the lovers clearly enjoy the situation, which is increasingly reminiscent of an uncontrollable skid.

Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd, became not only the performer of one of the main roles. He is the author of the idea, co-writer and co-producer. Under the pseudonym Weeknd, he conquered the main music charts of the planet and received a lot of awards, including the Grammy.

With such a resume, of course, he has the right to talk about the underside of the music industry, but, apparently, his main goal is something else. The pop star seems to have received all the musical glory and now probably wants to become as great in the movies.

An Everest-sized ego was rumored to be a big problem on set. Amy Seimetz originally took the director’s chair, and according to her plan, the plot of the series was to develop as the story of a young woman who is trying to cope with her feelings. But as this plan was put into practice, Mr. Tesfaye apparently concluded that his character would not receive proper screen time, and, therefore, attention. As a very influential participant in the process, the aspiring actor and producer insisted on rewriting the script and reshooting almost everything that had already been filmed.

As a result, the functions of the director took over Sam Levinson. He’s an interesting character, by the way. The son of Hollywood legend Barry Levinson, Sam hit the jackpot with Euphoria, where he was both director, writer and producer. Filled with all the known vices, the project about how difficult it is to be young became a scandalous sensation and, among other things, brought fame to its creator as a master of the sexualization of heroines and a lover of nudity in the frame. For a person with such abilities, “Idol” seemed just the perfect project, where, in addition to unrestrained youth, a musical backstage and a bit of the occult were offered. But this time the solitaire did not work out.

After two episodes premiered, critics were in doubt. Someone suggested that after what he saw, he would hardly want to see the naked Lily-Rose Depp on the screen again. Others were not enthusiastic about the scene of masturbation with ice cubes. People with fantasy wrote something about fifty shades of Tesfaye, but it did not look like a compliment.

After the premiere on streaming, with each new episode, the diagnosis of Idol became more and more intelligible. The whole bodily triumph of Mr. Levinson clearly could not distract from the main thing: in a hurry, the rewritten script would not hurt to bring it to mind, the characters’ lines sometimes did not stand up to criticism, and Abel Tesfaye was not an actor at all, which became especially noticeable given how much of him in frame.

Before the premiere of the series, many fans of complaining about the dominance of the industry of thieves kids (unbaby, if fashionable) most likely honed the language with which they could pounce on Lily-Rose Depp. Like, such and such, mediocre, crawls everywhere thanks to the patronage of famous parents. But here’s the problem. Against the background of Tesfaye, the young actress is just the future Meryl Streep. Lily-Rose got lucky with the project and with her partner. Not otherwise, such a lucky dad.
