Russian translator and radio host Leonid Volodarsky has died at the age of 73. According to relatives, he died after a long illness – on Saturday he was hospitalized, but the doctors could not do anything. The voice of Leonid Veniaminovich is familiar to everyone. Volodarsky admitted more than once that he was fed up with the question: is it true that you put a clothespin on your nose? Of course, he did not use any clothespins, and yet the special voice acquired as a result of an injury made him popular throughout the country.
Leonid Volodarsky started doing simultaneous film translation in 1968 when he was 18 years old. He knew English very well, because his father taught him at the Maurice Thorez Institute of Foreign Languages, which his son eventually graduated from. However, he became a polyglot much earlier: Leonid began to learn languages from the age of 4. He was fluent not only in English, but also in French, Spanish, German and Italian. In his youth, Volodarsky broke his nose twice – the first time in a fight, the second – a consequence of an accident. Hence the specific pronunciation.
Volodarsky’s voice became known throughout the country as early as the 1970s, when pirated copies of foreign films began to appear in the USSR. He, like no one else, could quickly translate the dialogues of movie characters in synchronism. Over 30 years of continuous practice, Volodarsky translated more than 5,000 paintings. His voice, manner, devoid of emotion and expressiveness, have become a meme. And Volodarsky was regularly summoned to the KGB because of his work with “pirates”.
Later, Volodarsky began to be imitated and invited to some projects, not for the skill of quick translation, but because of his recognizable nasal manner of speech. However, Volodarsky became famous not only for his voice. He was one of the first to translate the works of Stephen King into Russian.
Farewell to Volodarsky will be held on August 11 in the farewell hall of the Central Clinical Hospital No. 1 of the Presidential Administration (Marshal Timoshenko Street, 25).
